Our Curriculum

We offer a play-based, emergent and Montessori Curriculum, and we are dedicated to the “whole” child. Environmental education is integrated into our play based Montessori Emergent Curriculum underpinned by Aistear the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework and Síolta National Quality Programme, which addresses each child’s individual needs.

It is fitting that Síolta means ‘seed’, and Aistear means ‘journey’.

Your child’s journey with us will take them through a learning adventure where they will grow confident and feel valued; they will share their experiences and make sense of the world.

Little Moo-Moos is designed to foster learning through the exploration and discovery of the fields, farm & animals that are outside or within walking distance of our classroom door.

Our curriculum is based on nature and outdoors, monthly themes and children’s interests… exploring, discovering, caring… learning!

Little Moo Moo’s recognises that the establishment of daily routines is essential for all young children in our care. We strive to provide a programme of activities which encourage the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, creative and language development and of the children who attend the service.

All About our Classes

Ducklings

2-3The Ducklings classroom is designed to aid the child’s developmental needs. This is achieved by employing qualified, experienced and competent staff that understands the needs of children under the age of 3yrs. All our childcare team in the Duckling Class has the ability to provide suitable stimulus in a productive environment.

Your child will be provided with experiences relevant to their age and/or stage of development. We encourage physical and intellectual growth, whilst at the same time continually aiding your child’s social and emotional development.

Floor toys, activity mats, books, holistic baskets and construction boxes will help your child develop fine and gross motor control, whilst group activities such as painting, water play and play dough will aid in promoting con dence and self awareness skills.

Weather permitting the children will also venture out to the garden, where they can interact with the older children – children of the Bunnies class 3- 4yrs. We are delighted to welcome older siblings into our Duckling class any stage to visit.

Bunnies

Your child will be introduced to the Bunnies Room in a similar way to the introduction to the Ducklings Class. The transition is usually quicker as they are that little bit older and in general more con dent in their environment. A communal ‘Diary’ is used each day, detailing your child’s day i.e. food consumed.

Routines and Activities
The routine in the Bunnies Class is a little more structured than the Ducklings Class. Appropriate activities are introduced to your child aiding all areas of development and in particular their intrinsic sense for independence and exploration. This is provided through short structured play programmes. Regular outdoor activities take place in the Secret Garden, Hay Barn, Football Pitch and Playground. Garden play is also extremely important all year round. Once again we focus on your child’s overall development and use a variety of equipment to aid and refine your child’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social skills.

The Bunnies Classroom is divided into ve separate work areas and autonomous play and exploration is encouraged. We base our work and play sessions on a play based and Montessori Curriculum. The children are still very young so short work periods are encouraged. Tabletop activities such as jigsaws, sorting and pairing are introduced to promote motor skills, hand/eye co-ordination and basic numerical and literacy skills. We continue to refine and aid your child in the promotion of self-awareness and confidence.

Classes are 4-5 hrs daily / ECCE Scheme. Children need to be toilet trained.

Pre-School Class

3-5Our Pre-School Class caters for children from 4 to 5 years and employs a play based & Montessori Method of education. Our excellent Montessori curriculum is planned by our experienced teachers who incorporate each of the ve areas of the Montessori Method into daily life within the classroom. This creates a well balanced plan that our children thrive on. The term is divided by themes from the cultural area such as planting, the seasons, the water cycle and the solar system. These cultural topics are linked into the arts and crafts activities and discussed in our circle times.

The classrooms are designed in such a way as to meet the developing needs of each individual child. The children are guided through a range of activities and materials at their own pace. Our staff create a positive and secure environment where children feel confident in exploring their surroundings.

Part Time Service 4-5 hrs daily / ECCE Scheme. Children need to be toilet trained.

At Little Moo-Moos we value and respect all children equally, regardless of race, culture, religion or abilities.

Fledglings Early Intervention
Support Inclusive Model

As part of our diverse staff force Little Moo-Moos currently engages a consultant Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA), Qualifed ABA tutors, Montessori staff, Early years educators, a Speech and Language Therapist and an Occupational Therapist. Multi-Disciplinary services and staff are allocated based on each childs individual need. We encourage a multidisciplinary environment, and work alongside parents and their child to ensure we meet the needs of each child. We offer a diverse environment that allows generalisation of new skills to be achieved.

Early Intervention Support is offered at Little Moo-Moos to children aged 3 years to age 5 with a variety of needs and diagnoses such as and not limited to Autism Spectrum disorder, Aspergers Syndrome and Speech and language delay. Little Moo-Moos Playschool utilises an original model when assessing the educational needs of each child and provides an individualised education plan and continuous behaviour support for all children with additional needs. Each childs educational plan is intergreated into play-based, emergent and Montessori Curriculum underpinned by the Aistear and Síolta quality programmes.

Our Inclusive Practice experience have proven that children with additional needs significantly benefit from receiving appropriate support alongside their typically developing peers. Making friends and developing appropriate social skills are of fundamental importance as your child develops. We also strongly believe that all children should be integrated and make a conscious effort to integrate both children following mainstream curriculum and those with tailored education plans and additional needs.

Early Intervention Support FAQ’s

An individualised education plan or ‘I.E.P’ for short is a tailor made education plan specific to your child. An I.E.P allows us to adopt a child-centered approach and to work on the areas your child’s needs. All children are unique and excel and need extra help in different areas. Your child may be a wonderful reader but lacks the social skills typical of his age group. Using an I.E.P allows us to work with each child on an individual basis. At Little Moo-Moos each student with a 1:1 staff ratio receives an educational assessment and individual education plan.

In essence Applied behaviour analysis ‘ABA’ looks and works with two main areas – learning and behaviour. Common services of an ABA practitioner include conducting behavioral assessments, analyzing data, writing behaviour support plans and overseeing their implementation.

A Board Certified Behaviour Analyst or ‘BCBA’ is qualified to provide services to clients with a variety of needs and diagnos including Autism Spectrum disorde, Speech and langauge delay and behaviour difficulties. At Little Moo- Moos our BCBA Catherine Noone-Usher has been working with both young children and teenagers with autism for over six years. Catherine graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a Masters in Applied Behaviour Analysis in Psychology in 2013. Since then Catherine has followed on to achieve certification as a Board Certfied Behaviour Analyst. Her experience to date is predominately within an applied behaviour analysis setting working with children aged 2-16. As part of Little Moo-Moos multi- disciplinary team Catherine’s role is to supervise the academic assessment of each child. Furthermore, Catherine designs and overlooks the implementation of an individualized education plan for each student. Catherine also conducts behaviour assessments and is responsible for behaviour support within the pre- school.

At Little Moo-Moos we strive to provide the best level of behaviour support we can. Behaviour support is not singular to challenging behaviour or behaviour’s you want to see less of. We can assist and help your child to increase desired behvaiour. Such behaviours include toilet training, use of language, feeding, table top skills, play skills to name but a few- the list is endless.

Our playschool service offers a range of group activities during the school-day. These activities are delivered through a language enriched environment and include circle time, snack time, story time, garden play arts and crafts and group work.

Outdoor Play Facilities

Outdoor play is essential to early childhood development. Children learn social skills by interacting with other children, with adults, and even with objects and natural materials found in the environment.

The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden is a favourite with all the children. They follow the path –and through the gate– where they come upon a little nook, with a giant tractor tyre overhung by the ‘tree of life’, with all sorts of wonderful discoveries to be made, like little “hairy Molly” caterpillars! The children plant all sorts of seeds and plants in the vegetable garden, from huge, feathery fennel that smells like liquorice and tastes sweet – to big, orange pumpkins for Hallowe’en.

The Playground

The playground is a marvellous place indeed. With a big, high tree house right in the middle, a racetrack for all sorts of trikers and bikers, sand pits with diggers, swings & slides, stepping stones and balancing poles, hard surfaces, soft surfaces, grass, stones… and of course, the football pitch!

The Hay Barn

Well, every farm has a hay barn! Ours provides an amazing indoor space with plentiful of room for a whole class to develop their gross motor development skills! The large windows are low and the children enjoy looking out into the fields at the munching cows plodding around. “Hey, is that grumpy goose chasing Farmer Rory again?!”

The Byre

We are very proud of our most recent addition –The Byre and Look-out Tower– a fantastic place which everybody adores. It is a specially designed, purpose-built, safe environment. We put on our wellies and venture across the yard, out to The Byre. There, we can see Daisy being milked – up close, right beside her. There are little beds where the newly-born calves are being cared for – and we can feed them. Animals, as we know, have a wonderful, therapeutic effect on children.

The Look-out Tower

As you walk up the stairs from the Byre, there is a great surprise –ta-dah!– the specially designed viewing gallery, with a 360 degree view of the farm, from the elds and yard, into the shed where all the cows sleep, and the other shed where the tractor comes and goes with giant bales of hay, to the next shed where the bales are “scattered like an exploding jack-in-the-box”… and nally into the last shed, where the birthing cows lie – or sometimes the big, huge bull takes up residence.

And lots, lots more… Little Moo-Moos  extra-curricular activities

Before & After School Programme

The Little MooMoos Explorers & Thinkers Club is for those parents who have an earlier start or perhaps a later finish to their day – either on a permanent or occasional basis. There is a great array of organised activities to choose from, all relevant to their age.

French classes

The children will have the opportunity to learn French as part of their curriculum.
Children have significant advantages when they speak more than one language.

The benefits of learning French as a second language;

  1. Strengthen their problem-solving, reasoning and creative thinking skills.
  2. Develop their understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures
  3. Enhance their first-language and overall literacy skills
  4. Opens a child to the world by developing the child's curiosity.

Children memorize everything so they have an exceptional capacity for learning. It is advised to start learning a foreign language as early as 3 to 4 years old to make sure that it will be remembered on a long term basis. Learning French is a long-term process. If the children start learning it at an early age, they will acquire the language more easily than an older person would. Our French teacher, uses a method which encourages the children to speak their first words of French almost immediately. The emphasis is put on oral ( listening and speaking).

Nature rambles

Occasionally, we take the children on nature rambles down the fields. We always inform the parents of this in advance. A consent form must be given to and signed by a parent for trips ‘Down the fields’. The ratio of children to adults will be in compliance with the Pre-school Regulations and our insurance policy.

Baking Club

Collecting blackberries, making homemade jam, homemade brown bread, scones, and vegetable soup with vegetables from our Garden, Pizza, pigs in blankets, cookies and Muffins.

When baking, each child will have a chance to be ‘Chef of the day’.

Farm Walks

Children enjoy first hand experiences while walking on Farmer Rory’s farm, feeding calves. If we are lucky, we might even see a calf being born. We also visit the milking parlour, making children aware of ‘where milk comes from’ and what we make from milk (food pyramid/tasting), linking in with the Healthy Eating Policy. This gives the children first hand experiences and nurtures active learning. The ratio of children to adults will be in compliance with the Pre-school Regulations and our insurance policy.

Gardening

Little Moo Moos have wonderful outdoor facilities. The garden provides opportunities for the children to explore, create and inquire. It helps establish connections with school friends and with nature. There are few things children enjoy more than digging in the soil. They are fascinated when looking for worms and bugs. They also love to water the garden and anything else in the vicinity! Gardening gives children a sense of responsibility and achievement. Children, who are introduced to gardening at a young age, will have a love of gardening for life. They will also respect the environment.

Children who have a garden can spend endless hours exploring & thinking. All of the seasons bring new experiences for them.
